Strange creature of the week - Surinam Toad

Remember the strange kind of toad which I mentioned the other day on class?

How the mother would carry the eggs on her back and the babies would emerge from her back once they mature?

Introducing to you - the surinam (soo-ri-nam) toad

When the female toad releases her eggs, the male does water somersalts to force the eggs onto the females back until there are about 60 - 100 of them there. He then secures them into her back so that her sponge-like skin absorbs them! These baby toads develop and grow up until they are about 2 cm before finally popping out of their mothers back!

Some pictures of a mother with eggs on its back:

Here's a video on how the babies would emerge from their mother's back.

*If you are interested, find out more about the Surinam Toad and also, a similar type of amphibian known as the Midwife toads.

Equally interesting!

Enjoy! :)
