Focus: Early Settlers and their contributions

Scenario:

Due to an overwhelming success of the government, the population of Singapore has finally hit its target of 10 million people. This population explosion is due to increase birth rate, import of foreign talents and the opening of the new Integrated Resort.

This has resulted in an increase in the number of foreigners who have come to Singapore for work or study. As such, Singapore is becoming more crowded and there is a need to reclaim more land to meet the demands of the increasing population.

Due to International Water restrictions, Singapore is not able to reclaim any more land from the sea.

Left with little choice, the government is deciding to use the land at and around Singapore River to build new high rise flats.

This would mean that the river will be reclaimed and all its surrounding historical landmarks will be demolished to make way for the new high rise flats.

Mission:

There is an urgent need to persuade the government to conserve and not destroy Singapore River.

A detailed report must be presented to the government stating the historical significance of Singapore River and it is hope that the relevant authority would change its mind to conserve and restore Singapore River instead.

On a different note, the P4s are learning on how to play the ukulele this year. I have found an interactive website UKULELE which teaches on the playing of the 4-string instrument. For the rest of us, we stay tuned for the P4's performance and meanwhile, let's watch a clip which never fail to amuse me!

Dear 4 joy students,

Hope you have enjoyed what the teachers had prepared for you all at the Singapore River!

And through the stories of Ah Huat, Fatimah, Ah Moy and Mr Chettiar, I hope that you have a better idea of why Singapore River is so important to us - it carries our history and is the proof of the contributions of the early settlers.

I agree with Nurul on the part where the weather was very hot - but at least it wasn't raining! :D

I am proud of you all who walked in single files, behaved well (except a small group who could not stop munching at Ah Huat's station, which I strongly disapprove of) and especially for those who stayed for remedial - despite being so tired.

Hairulsham, thanks for making the special effort to confirm if there's remedial. I hope you did stay for your class.

I would also like to thank your parents who volunteered, helped out and braved the hot sun together.

I shall see you on Wednesday and do behave in class later! :D

Strange Creatures of the Week - Mudskipper

In the previous blog entry, I mentioned that salamanders fall under the same group as mudskippers i.e. they are both amphibians and some of you asked "what is a mudskipper?"

Mudskippers are a type of fish found in mangroves and they can be found in Singapore. The special thing about them is they spend most of their time OUT of water. To do this, they hold water in their gill chamber and their mouth and replace the water with fresh water when it becomes deoxygenated. By staying slightly wet (damp) they can also breathe through skin.

Their lower fins act like legs and help them to move on shore. Some of the species can even climb trees!

On a more personal note, I recall a close encounter I had with mudskippers.

Many years back, my family and I travelled to a small town in Malaysia and stayed in a house on silts. During low tides, you would be able to see the muddy river bed from the house and we decided to fish for some mudskippers. I managed to catch one but was totally horrified when the big creature decided to swish its tail and splatted mud all over me!

A mudskipper similar to what I had caught.

I never dared to fish there again.

But we still get to see mudskippers in certain parts of Singapore, like the mangroves in Pasir Ris, Sungei Buloh and Puala Ubin! Try to spot them if you get to go to any of these spots during the upcoming school holidays. :)

Salamanders belong to the same group as frogs and mudskippers. They are amphibians, which means that they can stay in both water and on land. Imagine being able to stay underwater without coming up to the surface to exchange for oxygen!

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.
After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE.

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?" The other friend replied "When someone
hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

Do not value the THINGS you have in your life.. But value WHO you have in your life!

Remember the strange kind of toad which I mentioned the other day on class?

How the mother would carry the eggs on her back and the babies would emerge from her back once they mature?

Introducing to you - the surinam (soo-ri-nam) toad

When the female toad releases her eggs, the male does water somersalts to force the eggs onto the females back until there are about 60 - 100 of them there. He then secures them into her back so that her sponge-like skin absorbs them! These baby toads develop and grow up until they are about 2 cm before finally popping out of their mothers back!

Hi Class!

We have just started on our plant cultivation and just as a recap, the steps that we took to get the germination of the seeds going!

Step 1: Pierce a hole through each of the egg carton's recesses

Step 2: Soak the seeds for an hour to soften their testa (seed coat)

Step 3: Fill the recesses with soil

Step 4: Place a seed into every recess

Step 5: Keep the soil damp and warm and wait for the seeds to germinate

In order to be recycled paper must first be separated into three categories:
1. OCC- old corrugated cardboard
2. ONP- old newspaper
3. MOW- mixed office waste
It is important to note that not all paper can be recycled. Certain papers that have been coated with chemicals, which makes treating them difficult, cannot be recycled with the three types listed above.

These types of paper included:
• Paper with food on it
• Waxed Paper
• Cardboard milk and juice containers
• Carbon paper
• Stickers
• Post-it Notes
• Fast Food Wrappers

How Will the Environment Benefit?

According to the EIA(Energy Information Administration) a paper mill uses 40% less energy to make paper from recycled paper than it does to make paper from fresh lumber. For every ton of paper recovered 2.7 square metre of space in a landfill is saved.

We come in contact with plastic every day when we pack our food, unwrap a newly bought magazine and buy our bottled drinks.

Many of these plastics can be recycled, and according to sembcorp enviro - a well-known recycling firm in Singapore, the plastics which can be processed locally are:

High & Low Density Polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE),
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET),
Polypopylene (PP),
Polystyrene (PS) and
engineering plastics such as Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT).

So how do we differentiate the different types of plastics? Simple, just keep a lookout for these labels on your plastic container:

Number 1 Plastics - Recyclable

PET or PETE (polyethylene terephthalate)

Found in: Soft drink, water and beer bottles; mouthwash bottles; peanut butter containers; salad dressing and vegetable oil containers; ovenable food trays.

Recycled into: Polar fleece, fiber, tote bags, furniture, carpet, paneling, straps, (occasionally) new containers

Number 2 Plastics - Recyclable
HDPE (high density polyethylene)

Found in: Milk jugs, juice bottles; bleach, detergent and household cleaner bottles; shampoo bottles; some trash and shopping bags; motor oil bottles; butter and yogurt tubs; cereal box liners

Recycled into: Laundry detergent bottles, oil bottles, pens, recycling containers, floor tile, drainage pipe, lumber, benches, doghouses, picnic tables, fencing

Number 3 Plastics - Not Accepted Currently
V (Vinyl) or PVC

Found in: Window cleaner and detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, cooking oil bottles, clear food packaging, wire jacketing, medical equipment, siding, windows, piping

Recycled into: Decks, paneling, mudflaps, roadway gutters, flooring, cables, speed bumps, mats

Number 4 Plastics - Recyclable, some of the items are more suitable for reusing
LDPE (low density polyethylene)

Found in: Squeezable bottles; bread, frozen food, dry cleaning and shopping bags; tote bags; clothing; furniture; carpet

Recycled into: Trash can liners and cans, compost bins, shipping envelopes, paneling, lumber, landscaping ties, floor tile

Number 5 Plastics - Recyclable
PP (polypropylene)

Found in: Some yogurt containers, syrup bottles, ketchup bottles, caps, straws, medicine bottles

Recycled into: Signal lights, battery cables, brooms, brushes, auto battery cases, ice scrapers, landscape borders, bicycle racks, rakes, bins, pallets, trays

Number 6 Plastics - Recyclable
PS (polystyrene)

Found in: Disposable plates and cups, meat trays, egg cartons, carry-out containers, aspirin bottles, compact disc cases

Recycled into: Insulation, light switch plates, egg cartons, vents, rulers, foam packing, carry-out containers

Number 7 Plastics - Not accepted
Miscellaneous
Found in: Three- and five-gallon water bottles, 'bullet-proof' materials, sunglasses, DVDs, iPod and computer cases, signs and displays, certain food containers, nylon

Recycled into: Plastic lumber, custom-made products

However, there's also other ways to save the environment insteading of mere recycling. One key method is to Reduce. Reduce the use of plastic bags, use shopping bags to do groceries．

Refrain from buying more new things - Reuse the pre-lovｅｄ！Ｌook into ways to reuse, or try flea markets or second-hand shops to look for other people's pre-loved items. We practise Reusing when we give the objects a second lease of life - like using a plastic bottle to hold our stationery, or make a mini-indoor garden out of it．

A Greener Environment

I was at Ikea earlier today and saw this very interesting parking lot.

Apparently instead of running on petrol, this type of motorcycle is being charged like how people charge their handphone battery.

They call it a "green lot" because apparently vehicles running on electricity is more environmentally friendly, just like how we recycle waste paper and plastic.

By the way, have you ever noticed how there are small labels at the bottom of your plastic bottles which might look like these:

These labels all means different grade of plastics and for our part of the world, currently only plastics labelled 1, 2 and 3 can be recycled. Show the following parts of this blog to an adult and get them involved in recycling too!

In life at times we would be faced with a dilemma of making the right choice.

Should we protect our friends by hiding the truth?

Should we take something that is not ours?

It is never easy to make that difficult choice. But children, we have to know that it is a necessary phase of growing up. Even if we are talking about a lost handphone which you have picked up from the bus - return it to the owner. Even if everyone else is doing the wrong thing, we stick to the right actions.

Everytime when we do something to others, it will be done back to us.

So just remind, plant a seed of kindness and you will reap a tree of joy.
